The Lefferts Gardens Montessori Elementary (LGME) is an independent, progressive Montessori school offering a nurturing environment for children ages 5 to 10. LGME is under the umbrella of Lefferts Gardens Montessori, which has been providing a high-quality, nurturing nursery school environment in Prospect Lefferts Gardens (PLG) since its founding in 1986.
LGME serves every child as an individual, turning their natural curiosity into a basis for a lifetime love of learning.
LGME is designed to support the emergent learner. This pivotal stage is when students are transitioning from hands-on learning to thinking abstractly. As our students enter this new developmental stage of investigation and enthusiasm to learn, we provide an environment and curriculum that spark their imagination, support their passion to discover and teach them to organize their approach to learning and problem solving.
Our multi-aged student body ranges from 5 through 10 years old. Students thrive in this intellectually challenging atmosphere of cooperative learning among peers and teachers. A social system of accountability, character building, and making wise choices is encouraged in our Elementary community. Students become advocates of their own learning while retaining their individuality.
Unlike traditional elementary schools that tend to treat each learning discipline as a separate entity, the Montessori Elementary curriculum supports coherence across the educational spectrum. Elementary students are introduced to the Great Lessons* which form a rational base and approach for history, geography, language, mathematics, geometry, botany, zoology, and the cultural arts. With this foundation, students are able to create a mosaic of how our world exists and how it can be sustained by working in harmony. Our child-centered approach and lesson plans are created to accommodate different learning styles. Work plans are adapted to each student’s individual pace to ensure mastery of concepts across the curriculum.
Our mission is to help students reach their full potential and to foster confidence where each individual is conscious of his or her ability to attain goals independently and/or collaboratively. We are dedicated to developing our students to be independent thinkers, lifetime learners and responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.
LGME offers small, mixed aged classes with a 10: 1 student-teacher ratio. Children develop a solid base in the common core standards (math, language arts and literacy, science, social studies and the arts). We leverage the resources of the community, such as the people, parks, libraries and gardens.
LGME includes physical activity as a component of every school day. Our goal is to serve the community, ensuring an inclusive environment that represents our unique culture.
